Living on board with an enteron system
Imagine how nice it would be not to have to think about the subject toilet waste water. Just using a toilet as you would in a house or flat. No lengthy explanations to guests on board and no worries about when to get the holding tank emptied.
The operation of our mini sewage treatment plant on board yachts and houseboats ensures complete independence from land-based waste management systems. There are a few good Housekeeping rules to follow:
The Enteron is a living system. Don’t use a multi-layer toilet paper or wet wipes. This will quickly clog the system.
Cleaners, detergents and scent enhancers can be a threat to the cultures of bacteria in the bioreactor.
When cleaning the toilet, divert the flow away from the Enteron and flush through with fresh water before redirecting flow back to the Enteron.
Should unpleasant odors occur, there is something is wrong with the treatment plant. In most cases, the bacteria in the reactor are dead e.g. after a standstill caused by lack of use. The bacteria have simply starved. A simple re-dose with the bacteria culture in its dissolvable bag, flushed down the toilet will get things going again.
How it works
The functional principle – our treatment process. Toilet waste is flushed into the first tank, where solid particles settle and floating substances accumulate on the surface. Solid components in the water are treated first by a macerator pump chopper. The remaining particles are gently pumped through our special hose system. This is where the special bacterial cultures get to work breaking down the waste – leaving only a clarified liquid. This permeates through corresponding perforations out of the tube into the tank container and from there into the third collection tank. Any tiny particles which have passed through the perforations form a sludge which automatically pumped out and fed through the pre-treatment process again. The resulting, now clear residual water is pumped through a filter into the sea.
The emptying of the collecting tank can be controlled fully automatically via a level sensor or manually.

Very little maintenance is required and this is only during over- or under-load operation.
The electronic controls must be activated by the user during overload (when there are more people on board or when underload during holiday mode or temporary closure.

The daily consumption of a standard system, designed for two people, is about 17Ah (12V)

Pumping: 6 x daily 2 min A 10 A = 2 Ah
TOTAL: 17 Ah – This can easily be generated by a solar panel or wind turbine directly into the vessel’s battery bank.
